History

Hoot Judkins Furniture began in 1962, when a man named Hoot Judkins opened a paint and wallpaper store in San Francisco. To complement his business, Hoot brought in a few pieces of unfinished furniture for customers to paint themselves, and within a few months, he knew he had found his niche in wood furniture. When Hoot retired, he sold the business to his general manager, Bob Watson, who owned and grew the business for more than 30 years. Today, Bob’s children, Bobby and Vicki, carry on the family tradition as owners and operators. More than 64 years later, Hoot Judkins remains the Bay Area’s largest wood furniture store, serving customers throughout Northern California and across the country.

True to our roots, our “Hoot” owl, paintbrush tucked under his wing, has always been our logo. As a third-generation, family-owned and operated company, we take pride in our friendly, knowledgeable team, trained to walk you through the wood, finishes, and construction of every piece and to help you choose the right size, style, configuration, and color for your space. That personal approach is why more than half of our customers are returning clients, and why we’ve earned a 4.9-star rating on Google, built largely on 5-star reviews from the customers we serve.

At Hoot Judkins, quality comes first. We specialize in high-quality furniture, much of it Amish-crafted, with finishes that stand up to everyday life and look beautiful for years to come. With one of the largest product assortments in the Bay Area, you’ll find nearly endless options, and almost anything can be customized, from wood species and finish to size and configuration. Our custom upholstery lets you choose the frame, fabric or leather, and cushion that fits the way you live, and our free design services help you bring it all together, whether you’re furnishing a single room or your entire home.

We’re also committed to offering greener choices. Most of our products are made in the USA, and we carry an extensive collection crafted from real wood and finished with low-VOC products. One of our top-selling lines is made entirely in California, which has some of the strictest finishing standards in the world. Because these pieces travel such a short distance to reach us, they require less fuel and reusable packaging, and we consolidate our delivery trucks to reduce fuel use even further. To broaden our selection and price range, we also offer imported furniture, but we are extremely selective about it, sourcing only through reputable U.S. companies known for quality furniture that’s built to last. We simply don’t believe furniture should be “disposable” or replaced every few years. To help you shop with confidence, every product on our website includes both a Quality Score and a Greener Score. Hoot Judkins is a proud member of the Sustainable Furniture Council and has earned a top score on the Wood Furniture Scorecard. To learn more, visit our sustainability page.

For more than 60 years, the Bay Area has made Hoot Judkins Furniture what it is, and giving back is part of who we are. Throughout the year, we donate furniture to local churches and school fundraisers, helping support the organizations that bring our neighborhoods together. Our largest effort is our annual participation in the San Mateo County Toy & Book Drive. Each year, we contribute more than $10,000 to help bring toys, books, and holiday joy to local children and families in need. It’s a tradition we’re proud to continue, and one we look forward to every season. If your non-profit is looking for a product donation for your fundraising event, please contact us.

Hoot Judkins is also a proud and contributing member of the Home Furnishings Association.
